Say I Right – Mastering Radio Communications

I hope every pilot will discover and visit the AOPA Air Safety Foundation web site from time to time. This web site offers a plethora of features and information for all pilots who care to become a better pilot. (www.AOPA.org/asf)

One of the big features on the ASF site is the educational courses that can be completed on line for wings credits. The newest of these courses deals with the use of the radio.

Please, everyone, whether you want the wings credit or not, go to the site and take the course. It will take about 30 minutes. Be a proper mentor and offer a good example for new and experienced pilots alike. Use the radio correctly – that includes using proper phasing.

If you do not want to take the course then at least delete the phase “any traffic please advise” from your airport vocabulary. The phase is stupid, and counter productive to the process of listen first, then announce the four Ws. If you need more convincing please note that the phase “any traffic please advise” is specifically singled out in AIM as something not to say.
