SPIN TRAINING

The Dylan Aviation Flight School offers Spin Training for professionals. This spin recovery instruction includes a one hour power point presentation covering the objectives outlined in the PTS for CFI Candidates, and a half hour of flight training. Completion of the course earns the required spin endorsement for CFI candidates. Students will do bump stalls, single and two turn spins plus slipping and skidding spins. The session will conclude with a “surprise” upset recovery from inverted!

Very often spin training is received in a non- aerobatic airplane such as a Cessna 152. It is certified for spins, but does it provide proper training? Recovery from single and multiple turn spins in a C152 is certainly a safe exercise, and it can be a lot of fun, but is that exercise of any practical value for the future CFI or any other pilot? Scenario based spin training, setting up spins from real flight situations, is more effective; for example the base to finial or skidding spin. When shown what spin entry looks like, a student quickly learns to apply the proper out spin control inputs and the airplane responds almost instantly, but wait! The student recognizes he or she is in deep @#*! – the airplane is inverted!

This most basic scenario should not be taught in a C152! These are aerobatic maneuvers and only appropriate for aerobatic aircraft. Please read more about CFI Spin Training in my blog dated 8//1/08.

Photo: A spinning airplane from the pilot's perspective is truly an unusual, nose low attitude. This unusual attitude coupled with an extremely fast rotation is an experience that will challenge the senses.
